The Nigerian Senate took a decisive step towards increasing judicial salaries on Thursday, as a Bill to that effect passed its second reading. This proposed legislation, which seeks to raise the wages and allowances of judicial officers, is poised to grant the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) a substantial salary increase to N5.39 million, while justices would receive an increased monthly remuneration of N4.21 million.
The Senate’s push for higher judicial compensation began with Senator Ashiru Yisa’s presentation of the ‘Judicial Salaries Bill of 2024’ before his fellow lawmakers. This bill, which outlines proposed increases in salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits for judges and justices across Nigeria, received lively debate and consideration in the chamber.
Other allowances not embedded in the total monthly package include leave allowances, estacode per night of $2000 when applicable, duty tour allowances when applicable, severance gratuity of N80.78 million after successful completion of tenure as well as an option of motor vehicle loan to be repaid before the expiration of tenure.
