A viral video shared on social media platform X on Saturday showcased a chaotic scene at Banex, an electronics and telecommunications market in Abuja, where a large group of civilians was seen overpowering two soldiers during a violent confrontation.
The shocking footage has sparked concern and raised questions about security and conflict resolution in the Nigerian capital.
According to eyewitness reports, the clash erupted over a dispute involving the sale of a mobile phone. As tensions escalated, a physical altercation ensued, with the group of civilians appearing to gain the upper hand against the soldiers. The video captures the chaos, showing individuals running and shouting as the situation spirals out of control.
In response to the incident, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command deployed intelligence officers to the Banex area in an effort to restore order and investigate the matter. As of now, no official comments have been provided by the Defence Headquarters or the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu.
A trader, who identified himself as Abdul, has come forward to explain that the conflict originated from a dispute over the sale of a mobile phone.
Abdul recounted to reporters that the situation escalated when a group of soldiers arrived at Banex to address an issue with a phone. The verbal disagreement quickly spiraled out of control, culminating in a physical confrontation between the soldiers and traders. The chaotic scene, captured in viral videos shared on social media platform X, displayed the overpowering of several soldiers by a multitude of civilians.
“There’s a problem at Banex now. Some soldiers came to complain about a phone, and during an argument with the traders, a fight ensued,” Abdul simply revealed.
