Human Trafficking: 46 Migrants Found Dead Inside Truck In US, 16 Others Rushed To Hospital

No fewer than 46 persons have been confirmed dead after they were discovered in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer in San Antonio on Monday, in what seems to be a human smuggling incident.

Washington Post reports that another 16 persons were rescued alive but have been taken to the hospital for treatment according to the San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood.

The victims had reportedly suffered from extreme heat and dehydration. According to Hood, the bodies removed from the truck “were hot to the touch.”

“There were no signs of water in the vehicle, and no visible working AC unit on that rig,” he said.
The nationality of the victims was however not disclosed and three people have been taken into police custody, authorities said.
Authorities noted that the investigations will be handled by Homeland Security Investigations, a branch of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that specializes in human trafficking cases.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said, “This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,” as he described the migrants as people “who had families, who were likely trying to find a better life.”

The incident comes amid a record influx of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border, where authorities are on pace to record more than 2 million arrests during fiscal 2022.
Smuggling organisations working inside the United States sometimes pack migrants into trucks and cargo trailers after they have already crossed the border, to sneak them past highway checkpoints operated by the U.S. Border Patrol.

In recent years, there have been several deadly human trafficking incidents on U.S. soil — but the death toll in Monday’s tragedy surpassed those events.

The location is close to Interstate 35, a major transit route for traffic and commerce from the border. Police said the truck full of people was discovered around 6pm local time.

Texas Republican Governor, Greg Abbott blamed the incident on the president as he tweeted, “these deaths are on Biden” saying it was a “result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.”

Our Troops Will Destroy Your Weapons To Ukraine – Russia Warns US, NATO

The United States and NATO have been warned over the weapons they are supplying to Ukraine.

Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu warned that Russian forces would destroy any war equipment being transported into Ukraine by NATO and United States.

The minister said this on a conference call in Moscow as reported by the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

He repeated the warning that it will consider NATO equipment arriving in Ukraine as a legitimate target, according to RIA Novosti, as quoted by CNN.

This latest warning came after Russian cruise missiles hit several locations Tuesday in western and central Ukraine, which Ukrainian officials said were an attempt to destroy the country’s transport infrastructure.

Shoigu warned that NATO vehicles with weapons and ammunition for Ukrainian troops will be destroyed in the country.

“The United States and its NATO allies continue to pump weapons to Ukraine,” Shoigu said.

“I note that any transport of the North Atlantic Alliance that arrived on the territory of the country with weapons or materiel for the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces is considered by us as a legitimate target for destruction.”

Taliban begs Nigerian firms, others to invest in Afghanistan

The supreme leader of Afghanistan’s Taliban-run government, Hibatullah Akhundzada, has invited domestic and foreign companies to invest in the country.

Akhundzada also called upon Afghans to get together and rebuild their war-torn country.

He made the remarks in his message on account of Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Muslim fasting month Ramadan.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan attaches great importance to reconstruction of the country for which it has assigned a competent economic committee to utilise all existing capacities toward the development of the country,” he said in his message released by the state-run news agency Bakhtar on Friday.

Mr Akhundzada also described Afghanistan as the common home of all Afghans and urged those who left the country to return home.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wants positive relations with the countries of the region and the world,” he added. “We allow none to pose a threat to other countries from Afghanistan and we also want other countries to engage with us on mutual respect.”

The supreme leader expressed his resolve to ban poppy cultivation and drug-producing in his country.

He explained that his administration would address the problems of farmers and the fellow citizens in general by providing alternative livelihoods.

Mr Akhundzada also called international health organisations and aid institutions to help the people of Afghanistan in the health sector, which is facing a shortage of medicines, professional staff and medical equipment.

He also highlighted education as the key to rescue “our compatriots and pave the way towards country’s development and prosperity.”

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is working to strengthen education and learning, opening new schools and madrassas (religious schools) in many central and remote areas of the country for religious and modern education. We are also providing a safe environment for education,” said the Taliban supreme leader.

Macron Becomes First French President In 20 Years To Win Re-election

Emmanuel Macron has made history after being re-elected for a second term as French president.

He becomes the first president in 20 years to win re-election after defeating his far-right rival, Marine Le Pen, on Sunday.

According to Reuters, cheers of joy erupted as the results appeared on a giant screen at the Champ de Mars park at the foot of the Eiffel tower, where Macron supporters waved French and EU flags. People hugged each other and chanted “Macron”.

Macron will join a small club – only two French presidents before him have managed to secure a second term.

But his margin of victory looks to be tighter than when he first beat Le Pen in 2017, underlining how many French remain unimpressed with him and his domestic record.

Ukraine On The Verge Of Joining EU After Completing Membership Questionnaire

Ukraine is on the verge of joining the European Union after successfully completing European Union membership questionnaire.

The questionnaire will form a starting point for the European Union to decide on membership for Kyiv, Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office, said, according to Reuters.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen handed the questionnaire to Zelenskiy during her visit to Kyiv on April 8th, pledging a speedier start to Ukraine’s bid to become a member of the EU following Russia’s invasion of the country. read more

“Today, I can say that the document has been completed by the Ukrainian side,” Zhovkva told the Ukrainian public broadcaster Sunday evening.

The European Commission will need to issue a recommendation on Ukraine’s compliance with the necessary membership criteria, he added.

“We expect the recommendation … to be positive, and then the ball will be on the side of the EU member states.”

Zhovkva added that Ukraine expects to acquire the status of a candidate country for EU accession in June during a scheduled meeting of the European Council meeting.

The European Council is to meet June 23-24th, according to the Council’s schedule on its website.

“Next, we will need to start accession talks. And once we hold those talks, we can already talk about Ukraine’s full membership in the EU,” Zhovkva said.

World War III Has Already Started, Russian State TV Declares

Russian state TV propagandists have declared that World War III had already started after Ukrainian forces managed to sink Vladimir Putin’s Black Sea flagship, the Moskva.

The Kremlin’s main propaganda mouthpiece went off on a rant last night after the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet was taken out.

The flagship sank while being towed to port yesterday after suffering heavy damage under circumstances that remained in dispute, Daily Mail reports.

Kyiv said it was struck by two Neptune cruise missiles fired by a coastal battery, which struck the port side of the vessel, causing it to roll over.

Olga Skabeyeva, one of Putin’s leading propagandists said Western support for Ukraine amounted to direct conflict with Russia.
She said, “What it’s escalated into can safely be called World War Three. That’s entirely for sure.

“Now we’re definitely fighting against Nato infrastructure, if not Nato itself. We need to recognise that.”
Military commentator Dmitry Drozdenko said on separate state-run Channel 1: “In actual fact a full-scale multi-level war is underway with the collective West. And the West has long been preparing for the war.”

Anchor Olesya Loseva, host of Vremya Pokazhet, told viewers that the West was now supplying “zillions of weapons” to Ukraine.
She claimed Ukraine was doing the West’s bidding by carrying out “yet more provocations, bloody, horrible, completely unthinkable.”

These will “force people to shudder once again and say that Russia Is a country which is unworthy of even being on the world map and that all Russians should simply be wiped off the face of the earth”.

Skabeyeva also claimed that Ukrainians were delighted to see Russian troops in their country.
She said, “for some reason ordinary Ukrainians themselves aren’t noticing any genocide.

“In the Kharkiv region, they’re welcoming our soldiers like real liberators.
“People are coming out with Russian tricolours onto the streets where our military kit is.
“The people of Kharkiv are accusing not the Russian army of genocide, but the Ukrainian armed forces.”

Elon Musk makes huge $43 billion offer to take over Twitter

The Chief Executive Officer of Tesla, Elon Musk, has offered to buy micro-blogging and social media platform, Twitter, for $43 billion.

Musk announced the offer in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday.

The billionaire will offer 54.20 per share in cash, representing a 54% premium over the January 28 closing price and a value of about $43 billion.

In a letter to Twitter’s board, Musk said he believes Twitter “will neither thrive nor serve [its free speech] societal imperative in its current form. Twitter needs to be transformed as a private company.”

Musk had first disclosed a stake of about 9% on April 4.

On March 24, the 50-year-old ran a poll asking whether or not Twitter’s algorithm should be open source.

Musk later asked whether or not Twitter rigorously adheres to the principle of free speech.

After the majority replied ‘no’, Musk asked whether a new networking site was needed, disclosing he was considering starting his own.

Those Who Choose War Always Loose – President Zelensky tells Putin

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has told his Russian counterpart that there is no chance of him winning the war.

Zelensky told the Greek Parliament on Thursday that “those who choose war always lose.”

The Ukrainian leader sounded it clear that anyone who blackmails Europe with an economic and energy crisis always lose.

Zelensky, who addressed the Greek Parliament on Thursday, called on them to “do more” and use its “opportunities as a member of the European Union to organize the salvation of Mariupol.”

“Those who choose war always lose. Those who try to deprive a country of its independence and its territorial integrity always lose.

Zelensky said that Russia’s actions were not only directed at Ukraine but also at Europe.

“I am sometimes lonely, my death would come as a relief to me” – World’s richest man, Elon Musk

The founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, has given an in-depth interview in which he has stated that his own death ‘would come as a relief’. The world’s richest man gave insight into everything from the possibility of life-extending technologies to his own personal life, in which he expressed loneliness.

In the interview with Insider’s Mathias Döpfner, Musk stated he did not believe in potential future life-extending technologies as such things would have a terrible impact on democracy, due to the fact that it would not allow for an evolution of ideas, and result in leaders who were too out of touch. He said:

“I don’t think we should try to have people live for a really long time. That it would cause asphyxiation of society because the truth is, most people don’t change their mind. They just die. So, if they don’t die, we will be stuck with old ideas and society wouldn’t advance.

“For a democracy to function, the leaders must be reasonably in touch with the bulk of the population. And if you’re too young or too old, you can’t say that you will be attached.”

Speaking of his own death:
“I think it would come as a relief.”

Musk’s views on life-extending technology seems to be somewhat opposed to that of fellow mogul Jeff Bezos, who has recently invested billions in businesses developing solutions to ageing and death.

When talking about his own life and his relationships, Musk said:

“I think there are degrees of love. But certainly, for one to be fully happy, I think you have to be happy at work and happy in love. So, I suppose I’m medium happy.”

“There are times when I’m lonely. I’m sure there are times when everyone is lonely. But it’s pretty basic. Say if I’m working on the Starship rocket and I’m just staying in my little house by myself, especially if my dog is not with me, then I feel quite lonely because I’m just in a little house by myself with no dog.”

NATO approves 4 battle groups to counter Russia

NATO leaders have approved the deployment of four additional battle groups to member States, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia.

Ahead of NATO’s summit on Thursday, March 24, the US Ambassador to NATO, Julie Smith said forces from different NATO members would be deployed to the Eastern European countries to counter Russian aggression in Europe.

Smith noted that the additional forces are “not just national forces” and would be revealed on Thursday.

Speaking at an Atlantic Council event, Smith said NATO is discussing its medium and long-term force presence in its eastern European flank.

“We are going to have to make a series of ongoing assessments about our force posture that will take us weeks and months into the future.

“It’s still an open question of how the alliance takes the NATO-Russia Founding Act which NATO allies believe Russia is in clear violation of and moves to its longer-term posture.

“All options are on the table, including permanent basing,” Smith said.

Smith then claimed Poland’s proposal of a NATO peacekeeping mission for Ukraine isn’t “dead in the water,” but said there are “a lot of open-ended questions” and “allies want to know more about what Poland is suggesting here.”

“We want to encourage this type of fresh thinking,” she said, adding that “no one ever shirks or turns away when an ally brings an idea into our discussions here.”

Zelensky Asks Biden Not To Sanction Chelsea Football Club Owner, Abramovich

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has asked American President, Joe Biden not to sanction Roman Abramovich as the Chelsea owner may be able to help with Russian peace talks, a report says.

Early this month, officials inside the US Treasury Department drafted a set of sanctions to punish Roman Abramovich, a prominent Russian oligarch, following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, say people familiar with the plans.

When it came time to announce those sanctions, which had been designed to go out in tandem with sanctions from the U.K. and European Union, the White House’s National Security Council told the Treasury to hold off, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Mr Zelsneky had asked the US president to wait on sanctioning Mr Abramovich, who has a close relationship with Vladimir Putin, as Ukraine’s leaders believe he might be a crucial go-between with Moscow, an official told the newspaper.

On the call, Mr Biden reportedly spoke with Mr Zelensky on a range of sanctions that the White House intended to implement.

“We are not going to read out private conversations between President Biden and President Zelensky,” said Emily Horne, a spokeswoman for the White House’s National Security Council.

The Chelsea Football Club billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich had earlier been hit by sanctions from the UK government.

But Top Flight reports that Chelsea Football Club could still be sold by the end of the month despite being under several sanctions and under the control of the UK Government.

Following the government taking control of the assets of former owner, Roman Abramovich, an American Investment firm has been tasked with selling the club, and following positive conversations, they believe the club could be sold by the end of the month.

The government will need to grant the club a new licence for a sale to go through after it placed sanctions on the club, but after an agreement was made that funds from a sale would go to charitable organisations and into a frozen account, the process of getting a new licence should be easy.

President Zelensky Blames NATO For Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia attacked Ukraine simply because his country is not a member of NATO.

Zelensky said that Sunday that if his country had been admitted into the NATO alliance earlier, then Russia would not have invaded.

“If we were a NATO member, a war wouldn’t have started. I’d like to receive security guarantees for my country, for my people,” Zelensky told CNN.

According to the President, he was grateful for how member nations of NATO have been. able to help his country since the invasion began.

But Zelensky called on the US, EU and other members of NATO to quickly admit Ukraine into the organisation if they truly want his country as a member.

“If NATO members are ready to see us in the alliance, then do it immediately because people are dying on a daily basis,” he added

He continued, “But if you are not ready to preserve the lives of our people, if you just want to see us straddle two worlds if you want to see us in this dubious position where we don’t understand whether you can accept us or not — you cannot place us in this situation, you cannot force us to be in this limbo.

“I requested them personally to say directly that we are going to accept you into NATO in a year or two or five, just say it directly and clearly, or just say no.

And the response was very clear, you’re not going to be a NATO member, but publicly, the doors will remain open,” he said.

Thousands Protest In Spain Over Soaring Fuel, Food Prices

Thousands of demonstrators hit the streets across Spain on Saturday in protest at the soaring cost of food, light and fuel, which have been exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The rallies, which took place in Spain’s main cities, were called by the far-right Vox party which sought to tap into growing social discontent over the spiralling cost of living that has left many families struggling to pay their bills.

Outside City Hall in Madrid, a crowd of several thousand people gathered, waving hundreds of Spanish flags and chanting angry slogans calling for the resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Putin Quotes John 15:13 From The Bible To Hail Ukraine Invasion At Moscow Rally

Russian President Vladimir Putin gives a speech at a concert marking the eighth anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Crimea at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow on March 18, 2022.

Putin paraphrased John 15:13 to justify the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which has killed hundreds of civilians, including dozens of children.

During his speech at the rally held in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium to “celebrate” the eighth anniversary of Crimea’s annexation, which is not recognized by most countries, Putin lauded the Russian military for “heroically” fighting in Ukraine.

“You know, I remember the words from the Bible. There is no other love rather than if someone gives soul for their friends,” Putin said,

The remark was followed by huge applause from the crowd.

Putin’s remark was a reference to John 15:13, which states: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

“We are seeing the heroic deeds of our guys in this operation,” Putin added, according to the CNN translation. “These words from the holy scripture of Christianity, it’s something that is very dear to those who profess this religion.”

“But everything is down to the facts that this universal value for all the peoples and all the confessions of Russia and for own people above all and the best confirmation of that is how our guys are fighting in the course of this military operation, shoulder to shoulder, helping and supporting each other,” he continued. “If the need comes, they will shield each other on the battlefield from the bullets as brothers. We have not had such unity for a long time.”

During Putin’s speech, Russia 24, the state-owned media outlet broadcasting the address, switched to footage of a military band playing on the same stage, The Moscow Times reported. The independent news outlet noted that “Russian state television is tightly controlled and such interruptions are highly unusual.”

However, the Kremlin later claimed the broadcast was “interrupted due to technical problems on the server.”

While the RIA Novosti news agency reported over 95,000 in attendance and over 100,000 outside the stadium, the newspaper cited reports of some people being forced to attend the rally.

“They stuck us in a bus and drove us here,” one woman was quoted as telling the SOTA news outlet outside the stadium.

Some reports in Russian media also suggested that people were offered 500 rubles (approximately $5) to attend the event.

The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said Friday it had recorded 2,149 civilian casualties, including 816 killed and 1,333 injured, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on Feb. 24.

Those dead include 152 men, 116 women, seven girls, 16 boys, 36 children and 489 adults whose sex is not yet known. However, “the actual figure could be much higher,” the OHCHR reported.

“Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multiple-launch rocket systems, and missile and air strikes,” the OHCHR statement said.

US Announces New Military Aid To Ukraine

U.S. President Biden signs legislation to offer Ukraine additional $800 million in military assistance, sending more anti-aircraft, anti-armor weapons, and drones.

At the same time, China’s third batch of humanitarian assistance is approaching Ukraine, including food, sleeping bags, moisture-proof pads and milk powder for small children.

China said wars and sanctions won’t bring peace, and urged all sides to prioritize fostering peace talks and avoiding humanitarian disasters.
