Nigeria To Witness Lunar Eclipse On Monday – Astronomy Research Group Reveals

The Astronomy Research Group Lead, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State, Prof Augustine Ubachukwu, has said that Nigeria and some African countries will witness the first total Lunar eclipse of the year on May 16.

Ubachukwu, in an interview on Wednesday with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the second eclipse is expected to occur on November 8.

He explained that every month, the new moon passes roughly between the earth and the sun and then orbits to the other side of the earth to become a full moon.

“In an event of precise alignment of these three heavenly objects, either a solar or lunar eclipse occurs. A total lunar eclipse occurs when a full Moon passes through earth’s shadow in space and is often called the blood moon because of the characteristic red colour of the lunar surface during the event.”

“The moon’s orbit is tilted with respect to the sun’s apparent path through the sky and only very occasionally does a full moon travel through the earth’s deep umbra shadow to cause a total lunar eclipse.

“This great event will occur in the early hours of May 16, 2022, and would be visible in total phase from most parts of Africa, including Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, a larger-than-usual full moon will enter the centre of the earth’s shadow for well over 80 minutes.

“In Nigeria, the eclipse is expected to start around 2.30 a.m, reaching maximum at 5.11a.m, and then ends at around 6.30 a.m, a total of about four hours of the eclipse.”

“During the moon’s long journey through the earth’s shadow, light that will reach the lunar surface will first be filtered through the earth’s atmosphere. Short-wavelength blue light from the sun will be scattered by molecules in the atmosphere, while longer-wavelength red light mostly travels right through,” the Don said.

He added that the dominant colour of light seen on the moon for the duration will be red.

An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object or spacecraft is temporarily obscured by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer.

“Late Alaafin of Oyo was poisoned” – Guru Maharaj Ji

A prominent spiritual leader, Guru Maharaj Ji, has alleged that the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who recently joined his ancestors, was poisoned.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that in an interview with BBC News Yoruba, published on Tuesday, Guru Maharaj Ji, who said he is deeply pained by the monarch’s demise, stated that Oba Lamidi must be resurrected. He however did not mention those behind the alleged poisoning.

Lamidi Adeyemi succeeded Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II in 1970, during the governorship of Colonel Robert Adeyinka Adebayo, after the end of the Nigerian Civil War.

The Alaafin died at the age of 83 on the 22nd of April 2022 at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti in Ekiti State,. His reign of 51 years is the longest reign of any Alaafin of Oyo in modern recorded history.

Traditional Worshippers Protest Open Display Of Alaafin Of Oyo’s Corpse On Internet During Burial

The Traditional Worshippers Association of Nigeria, Oyo State branch has condemned the open display of the corpse of the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, during the Muslim prayer session, saying it was against the tenets of traditional respect for a dead king.

The association disclosed this on Sunday in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Adefabi Dasola and Secretary, Dr. Fakayode Fayemi Fatunde respectively.

The statement noted that the late monarch never minced words in condemning the open display of any Yoruba Oba remains for any purpose while he was alive.

The traditional worshippers said it was disappointing to see the corpse of a revered monarch being displayed all over the internet.

They added that their protest against the disparaging act was to set the record straight that it was a disrespect for the dead monarch.

The statement read in part, “We send condolences to the children, widows, the Oyo indigenes, Yorùbá land in general and most especially, the Ṣàngó devotees worldwide who have just lost one of them. In fact, Oba Adeyemi was a true devotee of Ṣango and that was why he joined the ancestors on Sango Worship day.

“It is rather disappointing to have seen the corpse of our revered Alaafin being displayed all over the internet, it is saddening and we want this to be on record that we as a body are protesting this act, we do not want our children and grandchildren to question us in the future that we did not act or talk.

“The same disparaging act was witnessed during the burial of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji and we made our minds known as well. This is a trend that must stop or we will all be contributing towards the total annihilation of our tradition and culture, our Yoruba monarchs and kingmakers should please make efforts at remedying this malady.

“However, we extol the Ṣàngó devotees for being tolerant to allow the Muslims and Christians to do the initial prayers before the final rites commenced, it is a good sign of religious tolerance that we have been advocating.

“We also use the opportunity to enjoin all the Ọba in Yorùbáland to emulate Ọba Lamidi Adeyemi in the promotion of Yorùbá Traditional Religion which is the basis of the crowns on their heads.”

However, the group commended the maturity displayed by Sango worshippers during the burial, noting that it would go into history as worthy of emulation.

Top Monarch, Alaafin Of Oyo, Is Dead

The Alaafin of Oyo, Lamidi Adeyemi, has passed on, a report by PREMIUM TIMES said.

Alaafin Adeyemi, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, died in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The remains of the top Yoruba traditional ruler was brought to Oyo in the early hours of Saturday and traditional rites began, palace sources revealed.

He was 83 years old and the longest reigning Alaafin ever, having ruled for 52 years.

Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is expected to make an official announcement upon receiving the report of the monarch’s passing from the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, who will now lead Oyo before a new Alaafin is installed.

The monarch had been sick and a plan had been made to fly him abroad before he passed on late Friday night.

A source familiar with the medical travel plan said his tickets and those of a few wives were already procured.

His death came after the two other senior Oyo State monarchs – the Olubadan of Ibadan, Saliu Adetunji, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Jimoh Oyewumi – died.

All happened in less than five months.

A new Olubadan has been installed but the Soun remains vacant.

With the demise of Alaafin Adeyemi, it is now the turn of the Agunloye Ruling House to produce the next Oyo monarch.

Adeyemi’s predecessor, Bello Ladigbolu, was from the Agunloye House.

Nigeria Failed Me, Says Man Who Lost Fiancée In Lagos-Ibadan Auto Crash

A tweep, Toyosi Olufade, in a thread on Friday, shared how he lost his fiancée in an accident last month in Ibadan.

Olufade chronicled the different roles that operatives of government agencies and fellow citizens played during the accident and afterwards.

Narrating his ordeal, Olufade said:

“I am an accident survivor (March 22 2022) and I have so much. Lost my fiancée, who was beside me (while I drove) one month ago at Tollgate Ibadan. I honestly lost a treasure. Dropping this right here because I will refer back to this incident for good.

“To the person who jumped from nowhere to the express and made us run into a trailer, God sees you even though you escaped (you can’t run from God).

“To FRSC officials who arrived at the incident with no first-aid till she gave up beside me while we were transited to the far located hospital and to people who took advantage of the situation to rob the accident car and steal while our lives were been fought for, thank you so much.

“To the Nigerian Police, who didn’t do the needful but was waiting for me to recover and still come to pay a huge some of money before I could retrieve the already damaged and write off(sic) car, thank you also.

Blackout in Nigeria as national grid collapses third time in less than a month

The national electricity grid on Friday evening, April 8, collapsed for the third time in less than one month.

The grid first collapsed on March 14 at 10:40am leading to power outage across the country. Barely 48 hours later, the grid coll@psed again on March 15, resulting in blackout in communities across states.

Confirming the latest development in a statement on Friday, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, head of corporate communication, Kaduna Electric, said, “Dear Esteemed Customers, the management of Kaduna Electric regrets to inform you that the current outage being experienced in our franchise states is due to a coll@pse of the national grid.

The collapse occurred at about 18:29 pm this evening. Normal power supply shall be restored as soon as the grid is restored. We sincerely apologise for all inconveniences.”

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) also confirmed the development in a message to its customers on Friday night.

“Please be informed that there has just been a national grid coll@pse causing an outage in our franchise areas. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and appeal that you bear with us while we await restoration from the TCN. We regret all inconveniences caused,” the message reads.

Two Killed As Rival Cult Clash In Idumota, Lagos

It was gathered that clash involved hoodlums from Idumota, Balogun, Martins and Oluwole areas of Lagos Island.

It also affected trading and other commercial activities on the Island on Friday.

The hoodlums reportedly shot sporadically into different directions as they displayed assorted arms and ammunition.

Some shops were also said to have been shut down but security agencies on ground assured market men and women to open their shops.

But they only mounted positions to forestall any form of resurgence of violence or hoodlums returning to take advantage of the situation.

Kidnapped UNIPORT students regain freedom

Four students of the University of Port Harcourt, who were kidnapped over the weekend, have regained their freedom.

Reports indicate that the students were returning from the Ahoada area of Rivers State before their abductors struck.

It was also gathered that the victims had escaped from the kidnappers, on Wednesday morning, when a team of security operatives invaded the hideout with heavy firepower and engaged the kidnappers.

The Public Relations Officer of the University, Sam Kpenu, while confirming the release of the four victims, said the students have since reunited with their families.

Kpenu noted that the students had, as part of their academic exercise, gone to the Orashi area (Ahoada) to conduct vegetation sampling for their final year projects but were apprehended and whisked away while returning to the school.

He said, “Four students of the University of Port Harcourt who were kidnapped last weekend have been released and reunited with their families.

“Gbaa Nenubari, Asumbo Elizabeth, Eze Chimezie, and Onosigho Augustine were abducted on their way from the Orashi River where they had gone for a vegetation sampling for their final year project and postgraduate research work.”

Kpenu hinted that while the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Owunari Georgewill, received the four students in his office, he (the VC) commended the men of the Nigerian Police Force, the Chief Security Officer of the University and his men and the entire security agencies of Rivers and Bayelsa states for their timely and prompt intervention which led to the freedom of the students.

The spokesman quoted the VC as saying, “We are happy that you are back unhurt and now reunited with your family and friends. We sympathise with you for what you went through at the hands of your abductors.

“We are glad to inform the public that two PhD students and two undergraduates, who were kidnapped, have regained their freedom.”

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor urged all staff and students to be security conscious at all times, reiterating the resolve of his administration to always put at the front burner the safety and well-being of all students of the institution.

Suspected illegal miners arrested in Edo

The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) on Wednesday arrested four suspected gold miners.

Aniekan Udoeyop, Commandant of the corps in the state, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in his office in Benin, the state capital.

He said the latest arrest brings to 14, the number of suspects arrested for illegal mining in the state in less than two weeks.

Udoeyop disclosed that three of the suspects were arrested on Monday and one on Tuesday at Ojirame in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.

He stressed that the ban on mining earlier imposed by the state government was still in force and warned against its violation.

The commandant recalled that the ban was imposed by the government to avoid security challenges following the influx of strangers to the locality.

Udoeyop said that those arrested would be charged to court to serve as a deterrent to others who would engage in the illegal venture.

Tension in Southeast as court delivers judgment today on Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial.

Justice Ben Anya of the High Court sitting in Abia State had scheduled Wednesday to deliver judgment on Kanu’s fundamental human rights suit against the Federal Government.

There is palpable tension in the Southeast ahead of the court ruling on a suit filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The suit initiated by Kanu’s Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, had prayed the court to declare the invasion of the residence of the IPOB leader in Abia State in 2017 as unlawful and an infringement on his constitutional right.

Kanu, in the suit, also urged the court to declare his rearrest and torture in Kenya last year as unlawful.

The suit, which Ejimakor filed in August, further sought the court to stop the Nigerian government from prosecuting Kanu, mandating the Nigerian government to release the IPOB leader, ordering the Nigerian government to tender an apology to Kanu, among others.

While the Southeast, Nigeria, and the world prepare for the court’s judgment, IPOB had relaxed its sit-at-home order on Wednesday.

Despite relaxing the sit-at-home, some hoodlums have hijacked and tried to enforce the order across the Southeast.

On several occasions, some people suspected to be IPOB members have enforced the sit-at-home order, despite the group’s warning.

But, the separatist group had severally denied that those behind such illegal enforcement are its members.

On Tuesday, some youths suspected to be IPOB members had invaded a Catholic Church in Onitsha, Anambra State.

However, Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor downplayed the possibility of violence after the ruling.

When asked by a reporter about the possibility of violence after the judgement, Ejimakor said: “No. Not at all. Not a chance.”

On the possible outcome of proceedings, Ejimakor said: “Honestly, I can’t predict the trajectory of the judgment. Even if I can, rules of court mandate that I shouldn’t, as such may amount to pre-empting the court.

“All I can say is that I have made the best case for enforcing Nnamdi Kanu’s fundamental rights and against his extraordinary rendition.”

Suspected robbers attack driver, hijack truck with goods

Suspected robbers have hijacked a truck loaded with goods belonging to Unilever company along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode highway, Ogun State.

Police said the seven suspects were members of a syndicate who specialized in hijacking trucks on the expressway.

The suspects, who have been arrested by the police were identified as Onyegbuchi Nwafor, Idakole Benjamin, Ibrahim Musa, Abolade Shola, Ikem Ejimofor, Adebayo Jamiu, and Ayeye Edwin.

They were arrested following a distress call received at Odogbolu divisional headquarters on December 8, 2021.

At about 3am, the police got information that the gang had blocked the way to hijack a truck loaded with Blue Band products of Unilever Nigeria Ltd.

The robbers were said to have overpowered the driver and the motor-boy.

The duo were reportedly taken to the bush and they were tied down before their truck was driven away.

“On the strength of the distress call, the DPO Odogbolu division, SP Awoniyi Adekunle, quickly led his patrol team to the scene, but the hoodlums had moved away from the scene before their arrival.

“They started tracing the hoodlums based on the description of the hijacked truck. Their efforts paid off when the truck was sighted at Nairaland area of the expressway moving towards Ijebu-Ode road,” the Ogun State Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said on Tuesday.

Oyeyemi said the police succeeded in arresting Musa Ibrahim, Shola Abolade and Edwin Ayeye while others escaped in a Honda space wagon car.

It was said that the fleeing members of the gang hired a lawyer and briefed him that police had unlawfully arrested some of their friends.

“On getting to the office of the DPO, the lawyer was told to produce those who briefed him about the case before those in police custody could be released.

“The lawyer there and then called them to come as the case is about to be settled. The duo of Nwafor Onyebuchi and Idakole Benjamin, who was later identified as dismissed police sergeants came around and they were subsequently arrested by the DPO and his men,” it was said.

The police spokesman said the suspects had confessed to being the ones who hijacked the Blue Band truck.

At the State CIID, the suspects had confessed that “they have so far hijacked four trucks loaded with different types of goods, such as pampers, Nutri C drinks, Blue band and Honey-well flour. The value of the hijacked goods so far is estimated to be N25,688,000.

“They confessed further that they have a readymade buyer, in one Alhaji Jamiu who lived in Kwara State. The said Alhaji Jamiu was traced to Erin-Ile in Kwara State where he was promptly arrested.

“Their major receiver and financier Ikem Ejimofor was traced to Jakande Estate, in Lagos where he was also arrested.

“While Alhaji Jamiu confessed that it was his truck the suspects used in blocking the road when the last truck was hijacked, Ikem Ejimofor on his part confessed being the receiver of all the robbed goods which he bought at a very ridiculous price.”

The Commissioner of Police in Ogun, Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspect must be arraigned in court without delay.
