The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened a nationwide strike in protest against the Nigerian government’s failure to address crucial issues.
The union emphasized that the lack of governing councils in all federal universities across the country is just one of many pressing issues that the government has yet to address.
This was made known during a briefing at the ASUU national secretariat in Abuja, the union’s President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed grave concerns over the lack of governing councils in federal universities across Nigeria. This pressing issue was highlighted among several other urgent matters that ASUU claims the government has yet to address.
In May of last year, the government’s dissolved the governing councils of federal universities. However, ASUU has argued that running universities without governing councils is illegal and has the potential to create significant setbacks within the education sector.
They also expressed dissatisfaction with the recent salary increments for professors and other academics in Nigerian universities, describing them as temporary wage awards that can be suspended by the government at any time.
