He also revealed that NECO exams are now held in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, and that new centres in Egypt and Burkina Faso are awaiting approval. The London centre, he said, will benefit Nigerians in the diaspora, promote education, and boost national pride.
It added that the university already has clear procedures for anyone who wants to use its campus for filming or content creation. These procedures are meant to ensure safety, discipline, and the protection of the school’s reputation.
Another resident added, “Both Herbert Macaulay and Talimun Primary Schools are in terrible shape. The council chairman, Hon. Bayo Adefuye, should visit and see things for himself.”
He said the suspension will take effect from midnight on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. However, he warned that ASUU will not hesitate to resume the strike if the government fails to meet its demands within one month.
Dr. Alausa explained that every year, over two million candidates write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), but only about 700,000 get admitted. He said the new policy will help close this gap and allow schools to admit an extra 250,000 to 300,000 students each year.
According to him, all ASUU branches have been told to stop work and suspend all academic activities for the period of the strike.
He called on all levels of government to urgently employ more teachers and improve the working conditions of those already in service, saying teachers are key to building a better nation.
The video, which includes a Yoruba-language sound bite lamenting the situation, showcases the struggles of students who are forced to pay exorbitant rent for accommodations that, according to the union, are often substandard and lack basic amenities.
Reacting to the announcement, Success Enyubala, an alumna of the Academy who concluded her Basic journalism programme in August and served as class governor, described Mr. Ayinla as a disciplinarian and an exceptional teacher.
In a circular released on Friday, the ministry said the events put too much financial pressure on parents, waste teaching time, and turn education into business.
The demand was led by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. They highlight mounting frustration over the Federal Government’s failure to implement the renegotiated 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement. At present, Nigerian professors earn between ₦525,010 and ₦633,333 per month, while graduate assistants reportedly take home as little as ₦125,000.
