According to Dr. Akin Gabriel, a clinical psychologist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, more young Nigerians aged 16 are seeking treatment for mental health problems. He made the revelation on Wednesday, after observing an increase in the number of patients seeking treatment at the hospital.
Dr. Akin noted that the increase in patients seeking treatment for mental health issues is a worrying trend. He noted that this trend has become more noticeable among younger individuals in recent times.
Dr. Akin believes that the rise in patients seeking help for mental health issues is due to increased awareness of the importance of mental well-being. As a result, people are more likely to seek help when they notice any mental health challenges.
“More young people are presenting at the hospital. We’re having more of that.
“Young people within 16 are coming to the hospital with complaints that could be eventually diagnosed as depression or anxiety disorders,” he said.
According to Dr. Akin, the current generation is more knowledgeable and has access to a lot of information. This has led to an increased awareness of mental health issues, and the willingness to seek help when necessary.
“They are looking for that extra that will help them manage the information they have to help them out of their situation,” he added.
Dr. Akin cautions against judging or stigmatizing individuals who may be exhibiting signs of mental health issues. He also warns against using substances such as alcohol to deal with difficult emotions like sadness and depression. Instead, he urges people to seek professional help if they are experiencing any such feelings.
Dr. Akin explained that relying on alcohol or other substances to feel better or change one’s mood can have negative consequences.
“It is just for a short while; after the substance has cleared from the system, they require another one.
“That is where the cycle of addiction starts,” he said.
