In a stunning judgement handed down on Friday, April 12, the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced the controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment with no option for fine.
The events that led to the verdict began on April 5th, when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Bobrisky in court on charges of Abuse of the Naira and Money laundering. While the money laundering charges were dismissed, Bobrisky was convicted for Naira Abuse after confessing to the crime during the trial. The court subsequently remanded him in EFCC custody in Lagos, with the judgement delivered on Friday being the final outcome of the case.
The judge in the case set April 9th as the date for the delivery of judgement, but the Lagos Federal High Court was unable to sit due to the Easter holiday from April 9th to 11th. The adjournment left Bobrisky in a state of limbo, as he awaited the outcome of his fate. The final judgement, delivered four days after the initial date, brought a conclusion to the dramatic case that had gripped the nation’s attention.
