A devastating attack on the village of Mbaikyor in Benue State has left 17 people dead and many homes burned to the ground. The attack, believed to be carried out by Fulani herdsmen, took place on Thursday evening, plunging the village into grief and terror. Local residents are now struggling to cope with the aftermath of the violence.
A source who lost four uncles in the horrific attack described the events as “shocking and horrifying.” According to the source, Fulani herdsmen entered the village at around 8 pm and proceeded to burn the village down, leaving nothing but destruction and despair in their wake. The source said, “The entire village was razed down. It was a truly devastating event.
Among the 17 lives lost were Peter Tion, Nyityo Kyoon, Iorfa Ukombor, Doopinen Awua, Tyoshaa Mkaanem, Asan Ate, Asough Ate, Terzungwe Asoo Ate, and many others, including a retired military officer and a young boy. This loss has left a gaping hole in the community, and the victims’ families are now left to mourn their loved ones. The tragedy has struck a deep and lasting blow to the people of Mbaikyor.
SP. Anene Sewuese Catherine, a spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, confirmed that the police received reports of the attack, but did not yet have complete details. She stated that “Police operatives were dispatched to the scene, but I have not yet received a report from them about the nature of the attack. Once more information is available, we will update the public on what happened.”
