In an effort to address food insecurity, Nigeria Customs Service begins selling seized rice to the public. The sale is part of the Federal government’s initiative to reduce hunger in the country. However, some critics have raised concerns about the safety and quality of the rice being sold.
On February 22, the sale of seized rice began, with each bag of 25kg rice being sold for N10,000. Buyers are required to provide their National Identification Number (NIN) in order to participate in the sale, in an effort to ensure that only Nigerians benefit from the process.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Nigeria Customs Service announced that it would begin selling seized bags of rice to the public. The announcement comes amid a rise in food insecurity and inflation in the country.
