In an incredible display of solidarity, Nigerian activists, artists, and influential figures gathered in New York to witness and encourage Tunde Onakoya’s record-breaking chess marathon. The likes of Omoyele Sowore, Adekunle Gold, and Davido were among those present to cheer on Onakoya as he pushed himself to the limit, all in the name of creating awareness for the importance of education for African children.
Sharing updates on his X account on Thursday, Onakoya wrote, “Game number 100. 87 against my main opponent #CoachShawnMar. 13 against external challengers.
“We are now 31 hours in, with 27 to go! That puts us officially past the halfway mark. It’s looking possible now. Keep streaming, keep donating.”
The event, which is underway at New York City’s iconic Times Square, started at 10am on Wednesday, April 17, and is scheduled to end at 8pm on April 19, 2024. The marathon, which is a monumental feat, is not only a test of Tunde Onakoya’s mental stamina but also a noble effort to shed light on the critical issue of African children’s education.
Tunde Onakoya is pushing his mental endurance to the limit by attempting to play non-stop for a staggering 58 hours. If successful, Onakoya will surpass the existing record set by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway, which stands at 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds.
