Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) officials have sealed off a Chinese supermarket operating within the China General Chamber of Commerce premises in Abuja.
In a surprise raid on Monday, officials descended upon the Chinese supermarket and commenced questioning the Nigerian employees. After the interrogation, the FCCPC officials sealed off the premises, preventing any further business operations by the supermarket.
The discrimination faced by Nigerians seeking to patronize the Chinese supermarket within the China General Chamber of Commerce complex in Abuja sparked outrage among Nigerian citizens on Sunday. This fury was triggered by the supermarket’s policy, which barred Nigerians from entering, granting access only to Chinese citizens. Shaibu Sanusi, the facility manager of the complex, confirmed the discriminatory policy, acknowledging that Nigerians who did not reside within the complex were prohibited from utilizing the facility.
He clarified that Nigerians residing within the complex still had access to the facility, albeit this exception did not diminish the gravity of the discrimination faced by most Nigerians.
Despite the closure of the supermarket and the eviction of its patrons, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has expressed its concerns that certain individuals may be surreptitiously remaining within the confines of the complex, potentially to evade detection or any possible confrontation with the agency.
