AEDC has announced that it may disconnect power to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as well as several ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), due to a total outstanding debt of N47.1 billion owed by the Nigerian government. Of this amount, the Presidential Villa owes N923,873,150 in outstanding electricity charges. If the debt is not paid, AEDC may be forced to take drastic action to recoup the money owed to it.
In a notice issued on Monday, AEDC provided a detailed breakdown of the debts owed by various MDAs, including the Presidential Villa, as of December 2023. The notice lists the outstanding debts by name and amount, and states that the MDAs have until a specified date to pay the debts in full. If the debts are not paid, AEDC says it will be forced to take legal action to recover the money owed.
AEDC has given MDAs 10 days to pay their debts or face disconnection of power starting on February 28, 2024. In a detailed notice, AEDC explained that the debts have been outstanding for an extended period, despite multiple attempts to collect payment. AEDC stated that publishing the list of unpaid debts was a last resort after other efforts to resolve the situation failed.
