On Wednesday, the Senate approved a bill that aims to make higher education more accessible by revamping the student loan system.
The Senate’s resolution was based on the findings of a committee that was tasked with considering the proposed legislation. The committee, known as the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, carefully reviewed the bill before presenting its findings and recommendations to the Senate. Based on the committee’s report, the Senate approved the bill.
During the Senate’s session, the chairman of the committee that reviewed the bill, Senator Muntari Dandutse, presented the findings of the committee to the full Senate.
Last week, President Bola Tinubu sent the proposed bill to the National Assembly for its consideration and approval.
After debating the bill, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred it to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further scrutiny and recommendations.
The proposed legislation aims to make higher education more accessible to low-income Nigerians by establishing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which would provide interest-free loans to qualified individuals.
