In a last-ditch attempt to avert a nationwide strike, the Federal Government met with the Nigeria Labour Congress. However, the meeting ended without an agreement, and the strike is still scheduled to take place.
The meeting, which took place behind closed doors, was attended by the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Ministers of Labour, Agriculture, Finance, and Planning, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Head of Service. Representatives of the NLC and TUC were also in attendance. The purpose of the meeting was to reach an agreement that would prevent the planned nationwide strike, but no such agreement was reached.
After the meeting, NLC President Joe Ajaero addressed the media, confirming that the protest will go ahead as planned. He emphasized that the NLC is determined to see the protest through, despite the lack of progress made at the meeting.
In response to the DSS’ advisory on the protest, Mr. Ajaero said that while the DSS has a responsibility to ensure the safety of all parties involved, the NLC will also be taking steps to ensure a peaceful rally.
Mr. Ajaero also noted that the NLC’s list of demands will be presented to the National Assembly on the day of the protest. He stated that these demands are intended to address the issues that have prompted the planned protest.
“That is all. We have concluded on that. We are not doing rallies for the sake of moving around. We have demands which we must present. Maybe by tomorrow when we present it at the National Assembly, a copy of it will be made available to journalists. ”
