The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, announced the date of Eid-Fitri after receiving reports from the National Moon Sighting Committees across the country. The committees had been tasked with tracking the sighting of the new moon, which is the traditional way of determining the date of the holiday. However, the committees did not spot the new moon, leading the Sultan to set the date of the holiday for April 10.
A statement released by the Sultanate Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs confirmed that the committee had accepted the report of the National Moon Sighting Committees. The statement, which was signed by the committee’s chairman, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, announced that April 10, 2024 would be the first day of Shawwal 1445AH, or the date of Eid-Fitri.
“His Eminence, the Sultan felicitates with the Nigerian Muslim Ummah and wishes them Allah’s guidance and blessings.
“The Sultan, while urging the Muslim Ummah to continue to pray for peace, progress, and development of the country, also wishes all Muslims a happy Eid-El-Fitri,” the statement read.
