Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has reportedly been sent home from the World Cup after a training ground row with manager Rigobert Song.
Onana started for Cameroon in their 1-0 defeat by Switzerland last week but was not in the matchday squad for Monday’s early game against Serbia.
It then emerged that Onana was involved in a row with Song over the weekend over the team’s style of play. It has been reported that Song wanted the Inter Milan goalkeeper to play more direct and not take any risks near his own goal.
Back-up goalkeeper Devis Epassy started against Serbia and Song has told Onana, who has 35 caps for his country, to leave the Cameroon camp.
“He is an important player but we are in a difficult tournament,” Song said. “I know what I have to do, and that is to ensure that the team takes precedence over any individuals. Andre wanted to step out (of the squad) and we accepted that position. In a squad, discipline is important.”
Onana has previously been linked with a move to the Premier League and the 26-year-old joined Inter on a free transfer from Ajax over the summer.
Cameroon went into their game against Serbia knowing they will be eliminated from the World Cup with a game to spare if they lose and Brazil avoid defeat against Switzerland later on. Their final Group G fixture is against Brazil on Friday.
