The American International School of Abuja has officially contacted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, requesting “authentic banking details” to enable the refund of $760,000 paid in advance by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello for his children’s education.

Reports suggest that he used Kogi State Government funds to pay a staggering $720,000 in advance school fees for five of his children. The children, in grade levels from 2 to 8, were enrolled at the American International School of Abuja, receiving an education that many in the state may never have the opportunity to experience.

The case against former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello escalated on April 17, as the EFCC surrounded his Abuja residence to effect his arrest in connection with a suspected N80.2 billion fraud. However, just as the EFCC operatives were about to apprehend Bello, his successor Usman Ododo is reported to have arrived on the scene and allegedly spirited the former governor away, potentially obstructing justice in the process.

In a shocking twist in the ongoing investigation into alleged corruption by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, the American International School of Abuja has disclosed that a staggering sum of $845,852 has been paid in tuition fees for his children since September 2021.

In a letter addressed to the EFCC’s Lagos zonal commander, the school revealed that this amount, which exceeds Bello’s initial payment of $720,000, was paid through multiple installments.

“Please forward to us an official written request, with the authentic banking details of the EFCC, for the refund of the above-mentioned funds as previously indicated as part of your investigation into the alleged money laundering activities by the Bello family,” the letter reads.

“Since the 7th September 2021 to date, $845,852.84 (Eight Hundred and Forty-Five Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Two US Dollars and eighty-four cent in tuition and other fees have been deposited into our Bank account.

“We have calculated the net amount to be transferred and refunded to the State, after deducting the educational services rendered as $760,910.84. (Seven Hundred and Sixty Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ten US Dollars and Eighty-Four cents).

“No further additional fees are expected in respect of tuition as the students’ fees have now been settled until they graduate from ASIA.”
