“You Governed Anambra for 8 Years but Onitsha Had No Water”, Daniel Regha Slams Peter Obi
Social media commentator, Daniel Regha, has criticised former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for allegedly neglecting the water supply problem in Onitsha during his eight-year tenure.
In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Regha questioned why residents of Onitsha, regarded as the commercial heart of Anambra State, did not have access to pipe-borne water for over 25 years.
“Peter Obi was busy donating and commissioning boreholes across Nigeria, meanwhile Onitsha residents didn’t have pipe-borne water for over 25 years? A place he governed for 8 years, and a place that is regarded as the heart of Anambra State. OK,” Regha wrote.
Regha’s comment came shortly after reports emerged that Onitsha residents were celebrating the restoration of pipe-borne water, marking the end of a 25-year-long period without a steady public water supply.
Residents of Onitsha North and South Local Government Areas recently expressed joy as Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s administration restored pipe-borne water across the city.
The development follows decades of dry taps after the old Onitsha Water Scheme became non-functional.
Members of the Agwuzani family of Umuaroili, Onitsha, who originally donated the land where the Onitsha Water Board was built, expressed gratitude to the governor.
Speaking in Awka, the family’s leader, Mr. Sunday Ogoazi, said, “We want to appreciate Mr. Governor Charles Soludo for what he has done for us. In the last 25 years, Onitsha North and South had no pipe-borne water, but today, Soludo’s administration has revived the project and we are now enjoying water supply.”
He noted that water is now flowing in homes across the city, describing the development as a sign of good governance.
The family also commended the governor for resolving a long-standing 19-year land dispute involving their 75.55-hectare Oguwugwu Agbu land, after which they donated two-thirds of the recovered land to the state government for public use.
“We thank Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for helping us recover our land. That is what leadership and governance are about,” Ogoazi added.
