The Yoruba Party in the United Kingdom (YPUK) has unveiled its plan to contest in the upcoming UK general election, marking a significant milestone in the group’s efforts to represent and promote the interests of the Yoruba community within the British political landscape.
This is following the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to dissolve the UK parliament and call for a general election on July 4.
The newly formed Yoruba Party in the United Kingdom (YPUK), spearheaded by Olusola Oni, made its debut on the UK political scene on February 13, 2024. With a core objective of amplifying the Yoruba perspective within British politics, the party seeks to empower the Yoruba community in the diaspora and give them a platform to voice their concerns and advocate for their interests.
TheCable has gained access to a campaign pamphlet issued by YPUK, which outlines the party’s manifesto, including its promises to tackle climate change, lower taxes, enhance the National Health Service, reform immigration policies, and support the Yoruba community in the UK to achieve their full potential.
In a bold statement from one of the posters on the party’s social media account, YPUK declared, “Labour don’t know what to do. Tory don’t know what to do. We know what to do. Vote for the Yoruba Party.”
The pamphlet further states, “The prime minister has called parliamentary elections for 4 July 2024. The Yoruba Party in the UK shall be fielding candidates for these elections. The Yoruba Party provides a political voice for the UK Yoruba community.”
The Party has successfully met the necessary legal requirements and has been recognized as an official political party by the UK Electoral Commission. The party’s website and registration documents list Olusola Oni as the founder and treasurer, while Oluwole Oni takes on the role of Nominating and Campaign Officer.
