In an explosive new revelation, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Ola Olukoyede has accused former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello of an alleged misuse of state funds, claiming Bello withdrew a staggering $720,000 from government accounts to pay for his child’s school fees in advance.
Olukoyode made this known while speaking with journalists at the EFCC Headquarters in the Jabi area of Abuja on Tuesday.
In his revelation, Olukoyede disclosed that he had personally called Bello to arrange a meeting to discuss his case file.
Bello, however, did not respond favorably to Olukoyode’s request, allegedly making excuses to avoid appearing before the anti-corruption agency.
Echoing his steadfast commitment to justice, he announced that those who have conspired to prevent the arrest of former Governor Yahaya Bello would not escape the long arm of the law.
In an effort to prosecute Yahaya Bello for his alleged crimes, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is seeking to press 19 money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation charges against the former Kogi State Governor, totaling an alleged N80.2 billion.
The sheer number and severity of the charges reflect the gravity of the accusations against Bello, suggesting that his alleged financial improprieties were both widespread and severe.
Meanwhile, the EFCC has served a copy of the charge sheet of alleged fraud to the tune of N80bn against the immediate past governor on his lawyer, Abdulwahab Mohamed.
This followed a Tuesday order by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja after Bello’s absence in court.
The EFCC subsequently declared the former governor wanted for his persistent absence in court and for evading the criminal charges against him.
