Water Issue On OAU Campus: What Are We Reforming? Arafat, Where Is Your Welfarism Promised To Be Holistic? – Written by Majeed Lev

the fundamental duty of Students’ Unionism is the welfarism of the students .

Majeed Lèv writes….

Earlier today, a student put forward a challenging question which inquired about the essence of a union without the mettle to fight for students’ basic needs. To further challenge the essence of the Student Union, the student compared the past in which an Action Committee which was full of vigour and spirit, and notably without political power, fought to the bones for student welfare and now that there’s a Student Union with cold feet and the hesitancy to act.

It has been more than 3 weeks now that hostels on campus have been experiencing shortage of water supply. In fact, it’s a week ago today when the Union’s PRO sent some circular in which he made excuses of how there won’t be water in hostels for a certain period of time without specification of how long this gross inconvenience will be. It must be established that this is never typical of the Great Ife Union as it’s a union that rises to the needs of students promptly, and with clinical precision.

The importance of WATER during this particular time on campus cannot be overemphasized for:

  1. We are in a period where tests have begun and exams are imminent; a period when the students have to be physically and psychologically ready to face the biggest of sheges they have been facing throughout this semester. How do you expect students struggling and trekking all the way from Moremi to New Buka, Angola to Faculty of Education, Awo to Ajose to be psychological prepared for their test and have a rest of mind for the coming exam?
  2. The water obtained by students is not safe nor healthy for cooking or any use and this could lead to typhoid or other diseases that could be caused by the consumption of this impure water. How do you, Mr President and all union officers, feel comfortable fefebrating in your various offices while your students are liable to get sick during exams as a result of your irresponsibility and negligence?
  3. Toilets in this hostel are a gory sight and consequently laden with infections.

How did we get here?
What have we been doing precisely?

WAY FORWARD

This administration has been described by many as ‘School Management Boys’, something that should have been a shameful tag. However, it appears the current administration revel in such a tag. It must be established that the Great Ife Union historically was never a union to become bedfellows with the management. It is meant for the students and to fight even the management when necessary. Reform should never erase the precedential records to set a bad legacy for our union.

A letter must be properly written to the management demanding that this dire need should be catered for as soon as possible and in fact an ultimatum of 24 or less than 24hrs should be given. With the threat that Students will be mobilized down to the DSA office themselves to make their demand known through physical appearance and protest if stated demands are not meant at the stipulated time. And Hall to Hall awareness must follow immediately to that effect.

This fight is a fight for one of the most basic necessity of life in contrary and above all the unnecessary political games and shots happening around the union.

This is your call to either ignore or pick it, Mr President (Reform), Mr Holistic Welfare (Arafat) and all the other union excos that promise the students heaven and earth during their political campaigns.

ALUTA CONTINUA!

Post Article: Irabor renovation of Students’ Union Building is a welcome and commendable development but it’s not a principal or capital project that every student as members of the union benefits from. We must not leverage on that and leave our main duties.
