Nurses at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan have joined the nationwide strike action declared by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).
The strike, which commenced on Monday, July 29, 2025, was triggered by the Federal Government’s failure to meet key demands after a 15-day ultimatum issued by the union expired without resolution.
According to Galaxy TV, the Chairperson of the UCH NANNM chapter, Mrs. Funmilayo Faminu, confirmed the hospital’s full participation in the industrial action.
She said the decision followed a closed-door meeting with members and was “unanimous and necessary,” pointing to the government’s prolonged neglect of nurses’ welfare and professional rights.
Among the union’s major demands are the immediate gazetting and implementation of the revised 2016 Nurses’ Scheme of Service, enforcement of a National Industrial Court ruling delivered on January 27, 2012, and a thorough review of nurses’ professional allowances.
The association is also calling for urgent recruitment to address staff shortages and improved healthcare infrastructure to support effective service delivery across the country.
At the time of filing this report, the Federal Government is yet to make an official comment on the strike.
