Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been showered with national accolades and substantial rewards following their commanding performance at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, where they clinched their fifth consecutive title.
The Federal Government awarded each player the national honour of the Order of the Niger (OON), alongside a cash reward of $100,000 and a furnished apartment.
Members of the coaching and technical crew, including head coach Rena Wakama, were also recognized, receiving $50,000 each for their vital role in the team’s success.
The gesture was announced during a reception in Abuja on Monday, with First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the ceremony.
D’Tigress secured their seventh AfroBasket title on Sunday after defeating Mali 78–64 in the final. The triumph extended their remarkable unbeaten run in the tournament to 29 consecutive games, a streak that began in 2015.
The team overcame early challenges in the tournament but displayed resilience, tactical brilliance, and consistency to emerge victorious once again.
This celebration comes shortly after a similar recognition was bestowed upon the Super Falcons, following their victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
