The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new welfare policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers upon retirement.
According to the minister, the policy covers officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
The announcement was made on Thursday at the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where Tunji-Ojo presented his ministry’s progress and reforms.
A statement issued by DCF P.O. Abraham, National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services at the Federal Fire Service, confirmed the development. It quoted the minister as saying:
“In recognition of the welfare of senior officers, any officer retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General will now enjoy lifetime salary benefits—a policy graciously approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Tunji-Ojo expressed deep appreciation to the President for what he described as “unwavering support,” noting that agencies under the Interior Ministry are already benefitting from the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The minister also highlighted other key achievements of his ministry. He disclosed that a backlog of promotions has been cleared, with over 50,000 officers elevated within the last two years. Moving forward, he said, promotions will be strictly performance-driven and tied to individual capacity.
Tunji-Ojo further emphasized the ministry’s commitment to workplace mental health, pledging continuous support for officers. He also encouraged the Federal Fire Service to seek strategic partnerships with the private sector to enhance service delivery, strengthen infrastructure, and modernize firefighting operations across the country.
