The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a massive ₦712.26 billion contract for the complete redevelopment of Terminal One at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
This approval comes as part of a larger ₦900 billion national aviation infrastructure upgrade announced after Thursday’s FEC meeting, which was chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
The Lagos project, awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), represents the biggest share of the investment and marks one of the largest single-site aviation projects in Nigeria’s history.
According to Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, the revamp will involve dismantling the current terminal down to its structural frame and rebuilding it with modern mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Terminal Two will also be expanded with additional infrastructure, including a new apron, bridges, and roads.
The FEC also approved ₦49.9 billion for a 14.6km perimeter fence at MMIA. The security upgrade will include advanced intrusion detection systems, CCTV surveillance, solar-powered floodlights, patrol roads, and a fully equipped command and control centre. “Any intrusion will be detected in real-time, with precise location tracking,” Keyamo assured.
In addition to the Lagos terminal works, the federal government approved funding for several other critical airport projects across the country:
Malam Aminu Kano International Airport – ₦46.39 billion for runway and taxiway rehabilitation, plus installation of Category II lighting (timeline: 24 weeks).
Port Harcourt International Airport – ₦42.14 billion for similar upgrades.
MMIA Domestic Terminal, Lagos – ₦44.13 billion to upgrade runway and taxiway lighting systems to CAT II LED standards (timeline: 30 weeks).
Apron Reconstruction at MMIA Domestic Terminal – ₦24.27 billion for phased reconstruction of 82,000 sqm of apron space to ease congestion. The project will span 17.5 months.
The government says these investments aim to modernize Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, improve safety and efficiency, and enhance passenger experience across major airports nationwide.
