Fear and concern have gripped students of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) following a recent string of robberies reported at student hostels located in the Oke-Odo area across the Tanke axis.
According to a student who spoke with PurpleWorld Media on the condition of anonymity, the assailants struck in the early hours of the morning, gaining access to the premises by cutting through electric wires rather than entering through the main gate.
“They came to our areas around 3 something to my friend’s hostel but not through gate. They cut the electric wire with knife. I think they had come to the area in the morning or afternoon to watch the compound well before doing the work,” the student said.
The student further recounted the harrowing moment his friend was attacked for resisting the robbers’ demands. “They cut my friend with cutlass because he didn’t want to leave all his gadgets with them,” the student said.
Items reported stolen include high-end smartphones such as iPhones 14 and 11, a laptop, and other personal belongings.
In response to the incident, the Unilorin Students’ Union has issued a public statement via their official Twitter handle, acknowledging the robbery and assuring students of ongoing efforts to secure the area.
“Smart Unilorites, we’re aware of the incident at Oke-Odo, Tanke Axis. We’ve notified the Kwara State police, and they’re on site for patrol and investigation. Your safety is our priority. Rest assured, we’re committed to ensuring the welfare and wellbeing of all Unilorites,” the statement read.
The Union also appealed to students to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information during this tense period.
