A concrete slab fell from a bridge currently under construction in Oju-Ore, Ota, Ogun State, on Wednesday afternoon, leaving one person seriously injured.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon while construction work was ongoing at the site. According to eyewitnesses, the slab slipped from its position and fell beneath the bridge.
A trader at the Oju-Ore market, who spoke to ObjecTV in Yoruba and was translated by PurpleWord, explained how the incident happened.
“The slab was about to collapse, so one of the road workers tried to adjust it. Unfortunately, he could not control it. The slab was almost overpowering him, and as he was about to fall, he quickly let it go,” she said.
She added that the falling slab injured both the worker and another man who was under the bridge at the time.
“The worker was wounded. Another man, a Mallam who came to greet his brother who is a trader, was hit by the concrete slab under the bridge. The slab cut his ear and broke both of his legs,” she stated.
According to the trader, the injured Mallam is well known in the area and was formerly a trader in Oju-Ore.
“He is currently in the hospital, and we were told he may be taken to his village today. We traders here know him very well. No one died,” she added.
Following the incident, officers from the Ota Police Division reportedly visited the scene of the accident as well as the hospital to obtain statements from those involved. However, as of the time of filing this report, the relevant authorities have not issued any statement, despite attempts to reach them for comments.
