At least six students from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State were reportedly rushed to the hospital after the roof of the iconic Amphitheater suddenly collapsed during a class on Thursday morning.
According to reports gathered by PurpleWorld Media, the collapse of the roof at Obafemi Awolowo University’s iconic Amphitheater was caused by a whirlwind and heavy rainfall that occurred during a Social Ethics and Responsibility (SER 001) class on Thursday morning. The destructive combination of weather events resulted in portions of the roof caving in, injuring several students in attendance.
A witness, who requested anonymity, recounted the terrifying scene that unfolded during the Obafemi Awolowo University Amphitheater roof collapse on Thursday morning to reporters. The eyewitness described a chaotic and confusing atmosphere as students attending a Social Ethics and Responsibility class were forced to flee the area, scrambling to safety amidst falling debris.
“The sudden collapse left at least six students injured, prompting emergency response efforts. Some students sustained minor injuries, while others were more seriously affected by the incident. Emergency medical personnel swiftly arrived at the scene to provide assistance and transport the injured to the hospital,” the student said.
However, it was learnt that the university officials have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and assess the structural integrity of other buildings on campus.
As the investigation gets underway, the OAU administration has emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment for students and faculty. The university has pledged to take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, underscoring the importance of regular inspections and updates to campus buildings.
