Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and at risk of missing the majority of the season.
The Belgian goalkeeper left the training ground in tears, fully aware of the gravity of the situation.
The 31-year-old Belgium international will undergo surgery in the coming days.
“You never expect to go through something like this but now it’s time to accept it and do everything to overcome it and come back even stronger. Thank you all for the energy, love and encouragement, I assure you that they motivate me to recover as soon as possible”, he said on his official Twitter page.
As a result, Real Madrid are now faced with the decision of whether to enter the transfer market or put their trust in Andriy Lunin who is the second choice goalkeeper for the remainder of the season.
Courtois, who was named the best goalkeeper in the world at last year’s Ballon d’Or awards, has won Spain’s La Liga twice since joining Real in 2018. He contributed to 43 matches in Spain, Champions League, Copa del Rey for Real Madrid and solidifying his role as a linchpin in Real Madrid’s pursuit of European glory.
