Popoola Sulaimon, the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of PurpleWorld Media, has been awarded a prestigious journalism scholarship at the National Broadcast Academy (NBA), Lagos, under the Career Development with Augustina Armstrong-Ogbonna (CDWAA)initiative.
The scholarship programme, initiated by veteran journalist and media trainer Augustina Armstrong-Ogbonna, aims to educate, mentor, and empower aspiring journalists by equipping them with core industry knowledge and practical experience.
The CDWAA scholarship targets individuals with a passion for storytelling and public service, particularly in the field of journalism.
“You have been selected for the scholarship programme at the National Broadcast Academy,” Omowunmi Abraham, a representative of CDWAA, informed Popoola during a phone call, shortly before the interview took place.
The National Broadcast Academy, formerly known as the FRCN Training School, is Nigeria’s foremost institution for broadcast training. Established in 1957 to provide in-house education for staff of Radio Nigeria, the academy has since evolved into a premier institution for broadcasting professionals across Nigeria and the West African region. It now welcomes students from both media and non-media backgrounds, reflecting the changing dynamics of the broadcasting industry.
Popoola will be undergoing intensive training under the Journalism Department of the academy, which is known for its strong practical focus. The department trains both aspiring journalists and professionals looking to advance their careers in journalism, public relations, and freelance writing.
The curriculum includes hands-on instruction in key areas such as News Gathering, Reporting, Editing, Broadcast Presentation, Media Law, and Investigative Journalism. Other specialized modules include Digital Reporting, Conflict Reporting, Creative Writing, and Political Coverage. The programme is open to holders of Degree, HND, or ND from recognized institutions, and also provides refresher training for working journalists.
According to the academy, participants in the programme are tutored by seasoned media professionals and academic experts. Courses are designed to meet global journalism standards and to equip participants with the necessary skills to excel in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.
