The Lagos State Police Command has placed restrictions on this year’s Egungun masquerade festival, limiting all activities to designated outing points and approved venues.
According to the directive as revealed by Galaxy TV, Egungun practitioners are prohibited from holding public processions or street marches.
The police said the measure is to protect lives and property, prevent clashes between rival groups, and safeguard the rights of people of other religious beliefs during the celebrations.
The Command explained that recent reports of violence and destruction of property linked to rival Egungun groups in some parts of Lagos made the restrictions necessary.
To ensure order, organizers and supporters are required to notify the Commissioner of Police and apply for security clearance before bringing out any masquerade.
The Police further warned that anyone, masquerades, adherents, or followers who violates the order, disturbs public peace, or infringes on the rights of others will face the full weight of the law.
