Outrage as Pupils Reportedly Study in Dilapidated Classrooms at Yaba Primary Schools

There is growing outrage over the terrible condition of Herbert Macaulay Primary School and Talimun Primary School, both located in the same compound near Adekunle Bus Stop in Yaba Local Council Development Area, LCDA.

Pupils in the schools are forced to learn in classrooms that are dangerously dilapidated and unsafe.

Despite being just a few metres from the Yaba LCDA Secretariat, the two public schools have fallen into shocking disrepair. Their roofs are ripped open, windows shattered, and walls cracked. Many classrooms are covered in dust and leaking rainwater, putting both teachers and pupils at serious risk.

A video obtained by PurpleWorld showed collapsed ceilings, broken furniture, and damaged learning materials scattered around classrooms, giving the entire compound the appearance of an abandoned building.

Residents and parents who spoke with Lagos Reporters expressed deep frustration, accusing the government of neglecting the schools for years.

“Our children are suffering here every day,” one parent said angrily. “When it rains, water pours inside the classrooms. The walls are cracked and unsafe. No child should have to learn in such conditions.”

Another resident added, “Both Herbert Macaulay and Talimun Primary Schools are in terrible shape. The council chairman, Hon. Bayo Adefuye, should visit and see things for himself.”

According to findings, Herbert Macaulay Primary School was last renovated in 2020 under a Federal Government Sustainable Development Goal, SDG project. However, the work was allegedly done with poor-quality materials, causing the buildings to deteriorate quickly.

A teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity with LagosReporter confirmed this claim, saying:

“The renovation done in 2020 was substandard. Within a year, the roofs started leaking again. Today, both schools are back to the same terrible state.”

Parents and community leaders are now appealing to Yaba LCDA Chairman Hon. Bayo Adefuye and the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) to urgently intervene and restore the schools to safe learning conditions.

“These children deserve better. The government must act now before a tragedy happens,” one resident warned.
