The Ondo State Government has approved the implementation of death penalty for individuals convicted of kidnapping.
The state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, disclosed this on Saturday while addressing journalists after the monthly State Executive Council meeting.
He spoke on behalf of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Dr. Ajulo noted that the decision was prompted by the alarming increase in kidnapping incidents across the state, many of which have resulted in the killing of victims or the extortion of hefty ransoms from their families.
“Kidnapping and cultism have become major threats to public safety and social stability in Ondo State,” he stated. “This government is determined to adopt stringent legal measures to deter criminal elements and restore confidence among our people.”
He added that the proposed death penalty would soon be formally presented to the State House of Assembly as part of a legislative framework aimed at reinforcing the state’s response to insecurity.
