The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently condemned the federal government’s response to the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, criticizing the excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators. In a communiqué issued after its National Executive Council meeting on August 7, 2024, the NLC expressed profound concern over the government’s actions, which have resulted in the loss of lives and injuries to civilians at the hands of security forces.
The NLC attributes the widespread discontent and protests to the government’s ill-conceived and poorly implemented policies, leading to severe hardship, deprivation, and hunger. The congress accuses the government of disregarding warnings and advice from the NLC and other stakeholders, instead resorting to propaganda and name-calling.
The NEC meeting resolved to demand a reversal of the harmful policies, implementation of relief measures to alleviate suffering, and accountability for human rights violations. The NLC calls for an independent investigation into the killings and maiming of protesters and demands the release of detained protesters.
Furthermore, the congress urges the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with protesters, civil society organizations, and stakeholders to address the underlying issues driving the protests. The NLC threatens to direct its members to stay home for their safety if the government fails to respond positively.
The communiqué concludes by directing workers to remain united, take safety measures, and maintain non-violent and lawful actions during the protests. The NLC reaffirms its commitment to defending workers’ rights and welfare, ensuring justice, equity, and good governance in Nigeria.
