Nigeria’s Super Eagles Fall Short of Victory in AFCON 2023 Final, Losing to Host Country, Ivory Coast

The Super Eagles of Nigeria faced defeat at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 final on Sunday, February 11, as the host country, Ivory Coast spanked them 2:1.

The super Eagles captain, Troost Ekong scored the goal that put the Eagles ahead in the first half of the game but the Elephants of Ivory Coast equalized in the second half and later went on to score the second goal.

The match took place at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Ivory Coast takes home $7 million for lifting the trophy. While the runners-up, Nigeria, gets $4 million.

The two losing semi-finalists, South Africa and Democratic Republic of the Congo, each receive $2.5 million.
