The Trump-led U.S. administration has revoked Harvard University’s authorization to enroll international students, including Nigerians, following a directive from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
According to CNN, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that Harvard can no longer admit foreign students, and those currently enrolled must transfer or risk losing their legal status.
This move stems from Harvard’s alleged failure to meet federal immigration demands. DHS had previously ordered the university to submit records of international students’ “illegal and v+olent activities” by April 30, warning that failure to comply would jeopardize its certification.
The decision directly affects Harvard’s nearly 10,000-strong international community. For the 2024–25 academic year, international students make up 27.2% of the student body.
Harvard condemned the action as “unlawful,” pledging to support affected students. “This retaliatory action threatens serious harm to the Harvard community and undermines our academic and research mission,” said university spokesperson Jason Newton.
