The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of 17 soldiers following a brutal terrorist attack on a military base near the Bangi community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday during a counter-terrorism operation launched by troops based on credible intelligence.
The operation reportedly led troops to Kwanar Dutse Forest, where they confronted an estimated 300 heavily armed terrorists attempting to move toward Kwatankoro Forest. The movement, according to the Army, was believed to be either a coordinated plan to attack nearby communities or an effort to escape military pressure in neighbouring Zamfara State.
Anele said troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle that lasted over three hours, resulting in the deaths of 17 soldiers and injuries to 10 others. The Nigerian Air Force also provided aerial support, targeting escape routes with precision airstrikes in an effort to prevent the terrorists from regrouping.
She noted that further mop-up operations are ongoing to determine the extent of damage inflicted on the terrorists and to ensure the area is fully secured.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Oluwafemi Oluyede, has extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and assured that the wounded are receiving the best possible medical care. He also commended the courage and sacrifice of the troops in their continued efforts to safeguard the country.
