Nigerians are lamenting the devastating floods that have continued to ravage communities.
For weeks now, many persons have lost their lives while thousands of others have been displaced and farmlands submerged.
In several viral videos and images on social media platforms shared by people affected, the floods have ravaged many communities, washed away farms and destroyed people’s properties.
Meanwhile, many Nigerians have taken to social media to trend the hashtag — #NigeriaFloods.
The hashtag has continued to gain prominence with over 13,000 tweets.
Nigerians called for swift and massive intervention of both federal and state governments to provide a long-lasting solution to the unending flooding effects on citizens.
Reacting, The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala tweeted: “So sad to see the hundreds losing their lives in the floods in the various states of Nigeria!
“May their souls Rest In Peace! Need strong climate action. Adaptation and mitigation plans need to kick in.”
A not-for-profit organisation, Enough is Enough Nigeria (EiE) tweeted: “Nigeria is experiencing a flooding crisis, but the government is not taking any immediate action.
“It has become an ‘overwhelming’ disaster, killing over 500 people and displacing 1.4 million people. #NigeriaFloods”
Lawyer Abdul Mamud said: “Saddened by the images of human miseries and sufferings coming out of communities inundated by flood in the lower Niger – From Atani to Ahoada. Ordinary citizens have been left to their fate. What a country #NigeriaFloods”
Nigerian-born nurse based in Canada, Birgit Umaigba said: “Entire houses, healthcare facilities, worship centers are submerged in water. My heart goes out to the hundreds of people dead and the several thousands displaced as a result of the ongoing #Nigeriafloods . There’s no better time to address the #ClimateCrisis than now.
Popular #EndSARS activist, Rinu Oduala posited: “Political parties are campaigning but Nigeria is underwater. What about help for the people you claim you want to serve? Who will you serve if everyone is underwater? #NigeriaFloods”
Actor and social media comedian, Adebowale Adedayo, aka Mr Macaroni, tweeted: “There is a serious flood issue in Nigeria which needs urgent attention!!!”
