Nigerian actor and comedian, Debo Adedayo, better known as Mr Macaroni, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s media aide, Wale Ajetunmobi, traded barbs on X (Twitter) following a public clash over governmental accountability.
The origin of this Twitter skirmish can be traced back to a post featuring Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State embracing Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu. In response to this image, Sanwo-Olu’s aide, Wale Ajetunmobi, referenced a rumored connection between Mr Macaroni and Governor Sanwo-Olu, perhaps implying hypocrisy on the part of the comedian. Mr Macaroni, however, was quick to rebut, reminding the aide of his place in the grand scheme of democratic governance.
Wale Ajetunmobi, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s aide, took a swipe at Mr Macaroni’s alleged behavior towards the governor, describing it as childish. However, he commended the governor’s measured response to Mr Macaroni’s supposed opposition, saying, “Despite Mr Macaroni’s childish behavior towards the governor, Sanwo-Olu has always treated him like a son, saying ‘he is my son’. Humanity before politics.” This comment appeared to suggest a sense of paternalism on the part of Governor Sanwo-Olu towards Mr Macaroni.
Mr Macaroni struck back at Wale Ajetunmobi, dismissing his previous comments. On his X account, the comedian stated that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to Lagosians supersedes any personal ties he may have. He emphasized that the governor had sworn an oath to serve the people, declaring that this duty did not constitute a favor to Mr Macaroni or any Lagosian. Mr Macaroni’s retort sought to reframe the relationship between the governor and his constituents, asserting that elected officials are ultimately answerable to the people they govern.
He wrote, “You are the Childish Ignoramus sir. And you don’t have respect. The governor who appointed you as SSA works for me!!! He ran for office and swore an oath to serve the people of Lagos. He is not doing me or any other Lagosian a favor.
“The governor is not looking for him, but any time he sees him at a function, it’s the boy who always runs to dodge.
“I have never dodged. I will never dodge!!! I don’t want to associate with the governor because I am not happy with a number of his actions. It is the governor that wants my greeting. The last time we saw, he asked for my greeting, and I obliged as the Omoluabi that I am. Kapeesh?.”
