Hundreds of houses reportedly worth billions of naira were demolished yesterday in parts of Lekki, including Megamound Estate, Oral Estate, and Lekki County, leaving scores of residents homeless.
The Lagos State Government began the demolition exercise on Friday, citing illegality and lack of proper building approvals.
Residents, many of whom appeared distraught and shocked, lamented the loss of their properties. But the state government insists due process was followed.
“These structures are illegal and have no government approval,” said Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources.
The demolition has sparked public debate on urban planning enforcement and residents’ rights in highbrow areas of Lagos.
