The Lagos State Government has announced a significant increase in boarding fees for public schools across the state.
The new fee, set at N100,000 per term, marks a substantial jump from the previous N35,000, reflecting an almost 300% surge.
According to reports, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has communicated this change to the principals of boarding schools via a circular.
The increase in fees, which will come into effect for the 2024/2025 academic session, is intended to address the challenges faced by public schools in providing quality education and maintaining their facilities.
However, the decision has sparked concerns among parents about affordability and access to education in Lagos State.
The directive emphasizes that no additional fees should be collected by schools.
The timing of this increase coincides with economic hardship in the country, adding to concerns for parents already struggling with rising prices of essential items, including educational materials, ahead of the new school year commencing on September 15, 2024.
