The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has explained what happened during a raid that led to the death of a man, Endurance Udeke, at Periwinkle Estate, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, on Tuesday, November 4.
According to a statement released by the EFCC on Friday evening, its operatives were in the estate to carry out a sting operation against suspected internet fraudsters.
The agency said the operation went smoothly and four suspects were arrested without any problem. However, Udeke and another resident of apartment tried to run away when they noticed the presence of EFCC officials.
In a bid to escape, both men jumped from the fourth floor of the building. Sadly, Udeke died from his injuries, despite medical efforts to save him. The other man survived after being treated and stabilized in the hospital.
The EFCC said it had already contacted Udeke’s family to explain what happened and the steps taken to save his life. The family reportedly appreciated the agency’s efforts.
The commission expressed shock over the incident and clarified that there was no physical contact between its officers and the deceased before he jumped.
It added that the incident was reported to the police, who have since begun an investigation.
“The public should note that anyone with nothing to hide has no reason to be afraid of EFCC operations,” the agency said.
