The outgoing Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Barrister David Kolade Alabi, has announced the renaming of several major streets and landmarks within the LCDA.
One of the changes includes the renaming of the popular Charley Boy Bus Stop to Baddo Bus Stop, in honour of Nigerian rapper and music mogul Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Olamide Baddo.
The decision, according to the council boss, was part of a broader initiative to immortalize individuals who have brought global recognition to Bariga through their creative works and accomplishments.
The newly renamed streets and roads include:
Ilaje Road now bears the name King Sunny Ade Road, in recognition of the legendary juju music maestro, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye (KSA).
Ajidagan Street is now Olamide Adedeji (Baddo) Street, further cementing Olamide’s cultural impact and roots in the community.
Ifeanyi Street has been changed to Abolore Akande (9ice) Street, celebrating the contribution of the Gongo Aso crooner to Nigeria’s music scene.
Ayodele Street in the Ladi-Lak area has been renamed Tony Tetuila Street, honouring another musical icon and member of the defunct Remedies music group.
Ilojo Crescent in Obanikoro now carries the name Bukayo Saka Street, in tribute to the England and Arsenal football star, whose family hails from Bariga.
In addition to cultural figures, the council also honoured political leaders with ties to Lagos:
Bariga Road has been renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, in recognition of the current President of Nigeria and former Lagos State Governor.
Community Road in Akoka has been renamed Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Road, to honour the incumbent Governor of Lagos State.
Speaking on the initiative, Barr. Alabi stated that the renaming exercise was a farewell gesture aimed at preserving the legacy of the LCDA’s most illustrious sons and daughters while fostering a deeper sense of pride and identity among residents. He emphasized that these figures, through music, politics, and sports, have significantly contributed to the global perception of Bariga as a vibrant hub of talent and resilience.
Residents of Bariga have reacted with mixed emotions, with many commending the move as a long-overdue recognition of homegrown talent, while others called for infrastructural improvements to accompany the symbolic renaming.
The renamed streets and bus stops are expected to be reflected in updated maps and signposts in the coming weeks as the LCDA transitions to new leadership.
