Labour Party Director General, Doyin Okupe Pays N13m Conviction Fine For N240m Fraud

Mr. Doyin Okupe, the former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media to former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday evening made a payment of N13 million to satisfy the 52-year prison sentence he received for a crime involving 240 million Naira in money laundering.

Recall that in a ruling, Justuce Ijeoma Ojukwu found Okupe guilty of 26 of the 59 charges that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had brought against him (EFCC).

The 26 counts, which carried a 2-year prison sentence apiece, were to run concurrently, under Justice Ojukwu’s decision, thus the prison sentence for the guilty party would only be two years.

However, the judge offered a N13 million payment option, which must be made before 4:30 p.m. (the end of business today), for a total of N500 000 in each of the counts.

She commanded that Okupe be transferred to Kuje Correctional Centre to complete his sentence in prison if he didn’t pay the fine option within the allotted period.
