A Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, match between Katsina United and Barau Football Club turned deadly on Saturday after Barau FC player, Nana Abraham, was attacked and killed by angry fans of the home team.
Trouble started shortly after Barau’s Orji Kalu scored a 69th-minute equaliser to make the game 1-1. The goal appeared to infuriate some Katsina United supporters, who invaded the pitch and attacked the visiting players.
Barau FC confirmed the attack on its official X (Twitter) account, posting:
“70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC
#MaliyaBoysTogetherForVictory #KatBar #NPFL26.”
Just a minute earlier, the club had celebrated the goal with another post reading:
“69’ Goal! Orji Kalu levels the scores. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”
A disturbing photo obtained by PurpleWorld shows Abraham bleeding from a deep neck wound while teammates and officials tried desperately to save him on the pitch.
The game, played at the Katsina Township Stadium, was stopped as security operatives battled to control the chaos. Despite their efforts, Abraham reportedly succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.
As of press time, neither the NPFL management nor Katsina United had issued an official statement about the tragic incident.
This incident comes barely a month after similar violence in Kano, where fans of Kano Pillars attacked players and officials following a late equaliser by Shooting Stars (3SC) of Ibadan.
That attack led to heavy punishment for Pillars, including a ₦9.5 million fine, three-point and three-goal deductions, and the indefinite closure of the Sani Abacha Stadium, as contained in a notice signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi on October 13, 2025.
Observers say the league’s credibility and the safety of players are now at serious risk unless decisive action is taken to curb the growing menace of fan violence.
