Social critic Oluwaseyifunmi Oyetunbi has asserted that the affluent residents of Ijebu are not dissuaded from openly displaying their wealth, as they are unafraid of any repercussions from local superstitions such as witchcraft.
He argued further that in every Ijebu household, there exists at least one “billionaire” who recognizes that their financial success carries a weight of obligation to the family, knowing that the well-being of the impoverished and struggling depends on their benevolence and generosity.
Oluwaseyifunmi shared his statement in the aftermath of this year’s Ojude Oba festival, which took place in the historic town of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Taking to his Facebook page, he wrote, “The wealthy Ijebu people aren’t afraid of showing off for the fear of one witch or wizard in their hometown annually because every household in Ijebu has at least a responsible billionaire who knows the survival of those struggling rest on his shoulders.”
The annual Ojude Oba festival took place few days ago in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state. The event is widely known for colorful display of culture and heritage, drawing an international crowd of revelers, dignitaries, and spectators.
The festival is a celebration of the rich history of the Ijebu people, and this year’s edition still remains the talk in town as it was filled with dazzling affairs, with elaborate costumes, lively music, and an exuberant atmosphere. The town’s streets transformed into a regal promenade as the sons and daughters of Ijebu gathered, with their colourful shoes tapping to the beats and rhythm of talking drums.
