Human Rights activist and lawyer Inibehe Effiong has publicly denounced the purported plans by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State to construct 18-story towers in Lagos State, describing them as wasteful and irresponsible.
Citing dilapidated schools and low minimum wages for civil servants as urgent issues in the State, Effiong expressed frustration and anger at what he perceives as misplaced priorities by the Governor, potentially diverting funds that could be used to address the pressing needs of Akwa Ibom residents.
Taking to his Facebook page, he wrote, “I read a disturbing report on Premium Times that the Governor of Akwa Ibom State is planning to build 18-floor towers in Lagos State.
“Things like this make me wonder whether our State is cursed with bad and irresponsible leadership. Who sold this crazy idea to the governor? How is this a priority at this time? What’s wrong with politicians in Akwa Ibom?”
Inibehe Effiong further underscored his condemnation of the governor’s alleged plans, pointing to hunger, impoverished educational institutions, and insufficient minimum wages in Akwa Ibom State as evidence that the government’s attention and resources are desperately needed to address immediate challenges. Dismissing the Lagos towers as a “white elephant project,” Effiong questioned the rationale behind a plan that he believes fails to prioritize the people’s needs, instead choosing a “vanity project” that will drain the state’s coffers.
“People are hungry, schools are dilapidated all over the State, civil servants are earning ridiculous amount as minimum wage. Yet, the governor is thinking about another white elephant project that will not address the immediate challenges and needs of the State.”
In a final call to action, Effiong asserted that the people of Akwa Ibom should brace themselves for another massive protest and vowed that the date of the protest will be made public should the governor refuse to reconsider his plans.
“Akwa Ibom people should get prepared for another massive protest just like we did during the senseless new governor’s lodge in Lagos under the reckless Udom Emmanuel. The date will be made public in due course if this project goes ahead.”
