In a shocking daylight incident, a bus operated by the Akwa Ibom State Transport Corporation carrying 18 passengers has been hijacked in a brazen ambush by heavily armed gunmen.

According to reports, the incident unfolded along the Azumini border between Akwa Ibom and Abia states on a fateful Wednesday, July 10. The unsuspecting passengers had been making their way to Port Harcourt when heavily armed gunmen ambushed the Akwa Ibom State Transport Corporation bus, seizing it and all its occupants with callous disregard for the innocent lives onboard.

It was revealed further that the harrowing chain of events began just as the Akwa Ibom State Transport Corporation bus departed from its terminal in Uyo, en route to Port Harcourt. As the bus approached Iwukem, located within the Etim Local Council Area, heavily armed gunmen, lurking in wait, emerged from the shadows and unleashed a hail of gunfire into the air, catching the bus and its terrified occupants by surprise.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday to newsmen, the police PPRO of the state said, “The incident happened along the Azumini area of the road after the Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. All I can say is that the police are still monitoring the situation now,” the PPRO said.
