The Governor of Osun State, Senator (Dr.) Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, has set free 36 prisoners in celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day.
The prisoners, who were serving jail terms at the Ilesa and Ile-Ife Correctional Centres, were released after the Governor used his constitutional power of mercy, following advice from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
Governor Adeleke signed the order on September 24, 2025, saying he was granting them full amnesty.
This means that their punishments have been cancelled, and they are free from all penalties linked to their offences.
Most of those released were jailed for minor crimes like stealing and conspiracy. Many of them had already spent a large part of their sentences.
From Ilesa Prison, 29 inmates were freed, including Kehinde Ganiyu, Isiaka Mohammed, Oluwatosin Femi, Adebisi Adeniyi, Rotimi Paul, Oyewole Sunday, Ojo Adewale, Tajudeen Ridwan, Jokotola Quadri, Akinola Taofeek, and others.
From Ile-Ife Prison, 7 inmates were released. They are Yusuf Ola, Oyedeji Sunday, Ojo Olaoluwa, Ogunola Rafiu, Ayomide Amos, Usman Adefisan, and Adedigba Abiodun.
Speaking on the release, Governor Adeleke said the gesture was part of the spirit of Independence Day, which stands for freedom, justice, and new beginnings.
“As a people’s government, we will continue to ensure justice while also showing mercy. This amnesty is not only freedom for these inmates, but also a chance for them to change, rebuild their lives, and rejoin society,” the Governor said.
The order took effect immediately, and the correctional centres have been directed to release the listed inmates.
